By C. NicoleThe West Memphis chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority hosted a night of Prose, Poetry and Jazz Feb. 7 in West Memphis, Arkansas at Afrika’s Bookstore to highlight African artwork, literature and music and raise money for a local scholarship fund.
The local sorority hosted an event in West Memphis, Arkansas. The atmosphere of the room set the stage with its authentic African art memorabilia. Walking in to the event, everyone was automatically impressed by the historical artwork, books, and even a tribal drum that sat right by the stage. The rich colors of the African attire, and cloth adorned the room as guest entered. Shabaka Afrika, owner of Afrika’s bookstore, and local NAACP Chapter President, stated “West Memphis needs this kind of event to show African Americans in a positive light. In a society that is riddled with negative portrayal of black culture, this was a welcomed change. I was pleased to open up my establishment for such as auspicious occasion.” Afrika store owners, Shabaka and Odama Afrika, who are known for their love of African culture, opened up for a night of literature. The ladies of Delta Sigma Theta set up the event to highlight local literary talent. 5 Jazz artists were played throughout the event. They also presented live jazz vocalist, Sandra Bray, who did a rendition of “My Funny Valentine.” “As part of our National Arts and Letters intuitive this event is designed to bring awareness to the numerous literary writers who live within our own community. This year we are highlighting three writers of different genres One poetry, two religious, and three drama and romance” said Delta Sigma Theta President, Trayce Parker. Each artist read excerpts from her books to give us an idea of what their writings contained. After, each writer presented each piece, the audience followed by snaps of approval. There was a slight intermission where refreshments were served including: wine, fruit, and various chesses. While enjoying their refreshments, the guest had an opportunity to view items that were going to be auctioned off. The silent auction was designed to benefit the scholarship program where the sorority gives money to high school seniors. During, the event there was 250 dollars raised toward the scholarship. “I find literary writing and jazz music soothing to my soul. I’m pleased to see the generations are continuing to be a beacon of light in our community” said former Chapter President, Sherri Lowe, while sipping on her glass of Merlot. The audience feedback was so positive that the highlighted authors decided to do a book signing. The authors each had a table to display their featured works, and also so that the guest could purchase any of their literary works. Closing the event, the sorority thanked the authors and every guest in attendance. The members also thanked owners of the establishment of Afrika’s bookstore for hosting the event. This is the perfect place to host a perfect event,” said Lisa Halloway, 35, of Memphis, TN.
